May 19, 2014

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Women's basketball boosted its front court with the signing of Diamanté "DeDe" Martinez, which was announced by head coach Kristy Curry on Monday. Martinez, a native of New Orleans, is the fifth signee for the Crimson Tide's 2014-15 class.

"DeDe will give us added size, strength and athleticism on our front line," said Curry. "She has great potential with her ability to finish around the rim, rebound and block shots, and we are excited to see her development."

Martinez, a 6-3 forward that starred for Edna Karr High School, is ranked the No. 16 post in the nation according to ESPN.com. As a senior, she averaged 22 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks per game, collecting eight triple-doubles along the way.

The No. 5 selection on The Times-Picayune's Sweet 16: Class of 2014 list and member of the New Orleans Large Schools All-Area Girls Basketball Team, Martinez led the Cougars to the District 10-4A championship where she recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Earlier in the season, she propelled Karr to a 67-55 victory over Doyle High School to win the AllState Sugar Bowl Prep Classic in January adding 26 points, 21 rebounds and four blocks.

Martinez was also named to the New Orleans Area Preseason All-Metro Team in 2013 despite sitting out nearly the entire 2012-13 season after suffering a broken fifth metatarsal in the season opener. Prior to going down with the injury, she had 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks.
