TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's basketball team will take on Memphis in the opening round of the 2011 Women's National Invitation Tournament in Memphis on Thursday, March 17, at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Game times will be announced on Tuesday afternoon.
"We are obviously extremely excited about being selected to participate in the Women's National Invitation Tournament," Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson said. "This is a great opportunity for the team, especially for our seniors, who will be taking part in a postseason past the SEC Tournament for the first time in their careers."
The Crimson Tide will be making its first tournament appearance since the 2001-02 season. Alabama enters the tournament with a 16-14 record marking its first winning season since 2002. The Tide won five of its last seven regular-season games, including a 92-point performance at Arkansas. Memphis currently stands at 21-12 overall while posting an 8-8 record in league play. Most recently, the Tigers made a run to the Conference USA semifinals before falling to the eventual champions, UCF.
Alabama is making its fourth appearance in the WNIT since its inception in 1998. The Tide is 3-3 all-time in the tournament where it advanced to the quarterfinals in 2002.
The winner of Thursday's contest will take on either Creighton or Northwestern in a date to be determined.
