Navonda Moore

BIRMINGHAM – Navonda Moore, a junior guard on the Alabama women’s basketball team, has been named second-team All-SEC for her efforts during the 2005-06 season.

“It gives me great pleasure that the coaches around the SEC found a way to honor a player who I feel is very deserving of this award,” Alabama head coach Stephany Smith said. “I think she made great strides as a person and as a player and I am very proud of what she has done this season.”

Moore, a native of Jackson, Miss., was the team’s leading scorer during the regular season, pouring in 12.7 points per game. She averaged 14.9 points per game in the SEC schedule, ranking her seventh in the league in scoring during league play only.

She was red-hot down the stretch for the Tide, averaging 19.2 points per game in her last nine contests. That span included a 31-point outing against No. 5 Tennessee on Feb. 19, the first time in nearly two years that a Tide player scored more than 30 points in a game.

Moore also led the team in steals with 46 and pulled down 4.7 rebounds per game during the regular season.

It was the third-straight season that an Alabama player earned the honor after Monique Bivins was named to the second team the past two seasons.

Moore and the Crimson Tide will open play at the SEC Tournament on Thursday, March 2, against Vanderbilt. The 2006 championship will be held in North Little Rock, Ark., in the ALLTEL Arena.
