TUSCALOOSA – The home schedule for the 2005-06 Alabama women’s basketball team will come to a close when the Tide plays host to No. 3/3 LSU on Thursday, Feb. 23 in Coleman Coliseum. The game will tip at 7 p.m. and will be televised live by WVUA, local Channel 3.
The Tide (9-16, 3-9) will face its sixth ranked team of the season and its second straight in the game with the Lady Tigers. Alabama lost to No. 5 Tennessee on Sunday, Feb. 19 and to No. 3 LSU in Baton Rouge, La., on Jan. 19th in the first meeting between Alabama and LSU.
The Lady Tigers (23-2, 11-1) are in sole possession of first place in the SEC standings, having beaten second-place Tennessee in Knoxville on Feb. 9. LSU suffered its first and only loss of the SEC season last Thursday, Feb. 16, in overtime at Florida. Defending National Player of the Year Seimone Augustus, the league’s leading scorer, leads the highly-ranked Lady Tiger attack along with 6-6 center Sylvia Fowles.
Alabama will honor the lone senior on the team, center Dee Merriweather, prior to the contest. Merriweather is in second place on the school’s all-time blocked shots chart with 133 in her four-year career. A native of Hanceville, Ala., Merriweather graduated in December with a degree in consumer science.
The Tide will close out the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 26, with a trip to Lexington, Ky., to face the Wildcats of Kentucky. That game is slated to tip at noon central time and will be televised by Fox Sports Net South.
The 2006 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament will open on Thursday, March 2 in the ALLTELL Arena in North Little Rock, Ark.
