BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southeastern Conference released its SEC Athlete of the Week honors today for the fifth week of the cross country season. Senior Augustus Maiyo was named Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career at Alabama.

Maiyo, hailing from Kapsabet, Kenya, posted the second fastest 8,000 meter time in the SEC this weekend with a time of 24:12.70. He led the No. 6 ranked Crimson Tide squad to a third place finish at the Bill Dellinger Invitational behind No. 1 ranked Oregon and No. 4 Portland. They finished just 13 points behind defending NCAA Champion Oregon.

Maiyo also crossed the line before four of the five All-Americans in the field. Maiyo was also an All-American last season.

Maiyo finished fourth individually in a strong field including ranked teams No. 1 Oregon, No. 5 Alabama, No. 7 Portland, No. 17 Texas-El Paso and No. 23 Cal Poly. UCLA is also receiving votes in the polls.
