BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Alabama sophomore Kirani James has been named the Southeastern Conference men’s track and field Runner of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
James, a native of Gouyave, Grenada, and the defending NCAA 400m champion, made his outdoor debut in the event at Saturday’s Mississippi Open with a first-place finish of 45.12. His time was the third fastest in the NCAA this season and fourth fastest in the world. He also eclipsed the previous track record of 45.16 set by 2004 Olympian Kelly Willie.
Later in the afternoon he ran the second leg of the Crimson Tide’s 4x400m relay that finished third with a season-best time of 3:08.65.
James and his teammates will return to action at the prestigious Drake Relay this week in Des Moines, Iowa.
