March 26, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southeastern Conference announced its 2008 SEC Indoor Track and Field All-Freshmen teams Wednesday, honoring the league's top freshmen finishers in each individual event from the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Andrew Kirwa (Eldoret, Kenya) and Angelica Howard (Mobile, Ala.) garnered the award for the Crimson Tide.

This is the first year for the All-Freshman Team. On the women's side, Tennessee and LSU led the way with three athletes named, followed by Arkansas and Florida with two. Alabama, Auburn and Kentucky each had one named to the list.

For the men, Kentucky and South Carolina had four apiece selected, followed by Tennessee with three and Alabama, Arkansas and LSU each with one.

Kirwa placed sixth in the 5000 meters with a time of 14.19.94 to give Alabama two runners in the top-10. Kirwa also placed 10th in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:19.42, giving the Tide three finishers in the top-10.

Howard put together a solid debut for the Crimson Tide at the SEC Championships by placing seventh in the shot put with a throw of 48-09.50 and by nabbing ninth place in the weight throw with a heave of 52-01.00. Both are personal bests.

Dual-event top finishers include Tennessee's Jeneba Tarmoh (60m and 200m dash), LSU's Melissa Ogbourne (long jump, triple jump), and Kentucky's Derrick Locke (60m dash and long jump).

The only freshman to win an event was the Lady Vols' Annie Alexander, who was also named SEC Female Freshman Field Athlete of the Year. Alexander won the shot put.
