DES MOINES, Iowa - The Alabama men's track and field team concluded its weekend competition at the 101st Annual Drake Relays at Drake Stadium on Saturday with one individual Drake Relays Champion and the 19th-fastest 4x400 meter relay time in the world this year.
Junior Fred Samoei claimed the
lone Drake Relays title for the Alabama men this season. In the 800 meters, the Moiben, Kenya, native clocked a time of 1:49.73 to notch the victory.
On Friday, the Tide 4x400 meter relay team of freshman Fabian Norgrove, freshman Kemar Norgrove, freshman Kirani James and senior Matt Watson collected a season-best time, by nearly one second, of 3:09.78 to finish third in the prelims.
In the finals on Saturday, the squad dropped Kemar Norgrove, added sophomore Aaron Stockstell and clocked an even faster season-best time of 3:06.52 to finish third overall. The relay team notched not only the 10th-fastest time in school history - the newest time added to the list since 2002 - but also the ninth-fastest time in the nation and the 19th-fastest time in the world this year.
Already having set a new season-best time in the prelims on Friday, the Alabama 4x100 meter relay squad of junior Brandon Spradley, James, senior Ray Jadusingh and Watson combined for another season-best time in the finals. The group clocked a time 39.75 - currently the 11th-fastest time in the country.
Junior Joel Rop finished ninth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 3:51.17.
After posting a the third-fastest time of 10.54 (-0.7) in the 100 meter prelims on Friday, Jadusingh clocked a time of 10.50 (0.0) in the final to finish second.
In the high jump, sophomore Tyler Campbell was eighth with a leap of 6-10 3/4.
Fabian Norgrove was 18th in the 400 meter hurdles, clocking a personal-best time, by over one second, of 53.14.
Up next, Alabama will wrap up its regular season at the Mississippi Open in Oxford, Miss., on May 1.
