World-class performances highlighted the weekend for the University of Alabama men’s track and field team in action at the UTEP Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays.

At the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas, Sophomore Kirani James turned in the third-fastest 200m in the NCAA this season with a first-place finish of 20.41. James edged out Churandy Martina, who finished second in the 2008 Olympics.

James’ performance was matched in magnitude by that of senior Fred Samoei who won the 800m at the Mt. SAC relays with a time of 1:45.52 to finish second. Samoei’s time was the second fastest time in Alabama history and the fifth fastest 800m time in the world this season.

“This was a great weekend for us,” UA head coach Harvey Glance said. “This was moving week, so to speak, for us to show that we’re a pretty good team and we did that. We performed well and had a lot of top three and world-class performances. I’m real proud of the guys and the outstanding job they did.”

In addition to the Crimson Tide’s two top times on the weekend, Kamal Fuller won the 110m hurdles at UTEP with a time of 14.40, while Michael Hughes tied for the top mark in the pole vault by clearing 15-3.25. The Tide’s 4x400m relay team of Dwayne Extol, James, Bobby Onyeukwu and Joel Lynch also finished first with a time of 3:09.18 while the 4x100m team came in second at 40.81.

In other distance action at the Mt. SAC Relays, Julius Bor finished ninth in the Olympic Development Elite section of the 1,500m with a time of 4:43.90.

The team will have the upcoming weekend off from competition and will take the track the following week at the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
