LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Alabama men's track and field team got its 2011 indoor season underway with a solid showing at the Kentucky Invitational with 11 top-10 performances in the two-day event at Kentucky's Nutter Field House.

"We had a real good meet and it was probably the best opening meet we've had," UA head coach Harvey Glance said. "I'm very proud of the way we competed and we had a lot of great finishes, wins and personal bests that got our season off to great start."

Leading the way in that great start to 2011 was Fred Samoei who paced three UA runners in the top five of the 3,000m with the fastest time in the nation this season at 8:03.20. Julius Bor finished second in 8:07.81, the third-fastest finish this season while Carrison Kemei was fourth at 8:15.76.

The Crimson Tide's 4x400m relay squad also turned in the top time of the day as the team of Kirani James, Dwayne Extol, Bobby Onyeukwu, Joel Lynch crossed first with a time of 3:12.87.

In the high jump on Friday evening, junior Tyler Campbell and freshman Jonathan Reid both cleared 7-0.25 in their season debuts with Campbell winning the event by virtue of clearing 7-0.25 on his first attempt while Reid recorded one miss at the height. Their performance ties for the 10th best in school history. Reid followed that up with a sixth-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 48-10.75, also the 10th-best mark in UA history.

Also in the jumps, Kamal Fuller turned in a leap of 24-7.75 in the long jump ranking him 10th in the nation in the event this season. Michael Hughes turned in a fifth-place finish in the pole vault with a personal best vault of 16-0.75.

The team will return to action next weekend at the Cherry & Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Jan. 21-22.
