TULSA, Okla. The University of Alabama’s Dan Buikema and Mathieu Thibaudeau both fell in the qualifying round of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships today in Tulsa, Okla.
Thibaudeau, who currently holds a No. 97 national ranking, defeated Derek Stephens of NC State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in the first round of the qualifier. In the second round, Thibaudeau fell to Virginia’s Houston Barrick, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Buikema, a junior from Battle Creek, Mich., fell to Oklahoma State’s Dmytro Petrov, 6-3, 6-1, in his first round match, however, he rebounded to defeat Edson Abrao of Arkansas-Little Rock, 6-0, 6-4, in the consolation round on the second day.
Buikema and Thibaudeau continue play at All-Americans’ in the main draw of the doubles bracket. Senior Billy Mertz joins his teammates Wednesday as he waits for his opponent in the first round of the singles main draw.
The main draw of the tournament runs Oct. 4-7 and features 64 singles players and 32 doubles players from around the nation. The main draw follows the prequalifying and qualifying rounds of the tournament. “All-Americans’ is hosted by the University of Tulsa and matches are held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
