Charlottesville, Vir.— The Crimson Tide Men’s Tennis Team had an impressive showing for Billy Pates first Tournament as head coach in the 2002 Virginia Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville on Friday.
The three-day event features three singles draws of 32 players and 3 doubles draws of 16 teams. Flight A features six players ranked by the ITA nationally in the 2002-03 preseason rankings, including one of Alabama’s seven seniors, Max Belski.
“It was a good start to the fall season,” said Pate. “We got to play a lot of matches. I am pleased with their effort and I hope that we can build on that throughout the rest of the weekend.”
In flight A, Bleski and Stephen Mitchell won two matches to advance to the Quarterfinals. Senior Geoff Hiscox and Junior Chris Gostek won their opening round matches, but were defeated in the second round.
In flight B, Junior Christen Broderson advanced to the quarterfinals, along with Senior Michael Ray Pallares. Senior Brian Isern was defeated in the first round and won in the first round of the consolation bracket.
In Flight C, Senior Captain William Boyles coasted to the quarterfinals after a first round bye and a convincing second round win. Senior Brad Friedman also had a bye in the first round and was defeated in the second round.
The Tide won all three doubles matches. In Flight A Mitchell and Hiscox won 8-3, while Boyles and Belski won 8-4. In flight B Gostek and Friedman won in a tie-breaker, 9-8.
Play will continue on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. as the three flights of singles and doubles begin play in the quarterfinals.
