TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Head Coach Billy Pate announced the signing of Daniil Proskura, who will join the Crimson Tide men's tennis team in January of 2011.
"We're very excited to have Daniil join us in January," Pate said. "He is a young, up and coming player who we believe can perform at a high level right away. He has posted great results this summer and displays an exceptionally mature and professional attitude toward his tennis career."
Proskura, a native of Tallinn, Estonia, is a national champion by virtue of claiming the Boys 18 Singles title. In international competition, he has posted outstanding results on the junior circuit this summer most recently defeating the No. 1 junior player in the world and current Wimbledon Juniors defending champion Marton Fucsovics. Prior to that win, Proskura won the Pajulahti Cup in Finland, claiming all five matches in straight sets. He also made it to the finals of the Estonian Junior Open in June.
In addition, Proskura has had success in doubles competition, reaching two finals in the month of June. Proskura currently sits at No. 283 in the ITF Junior rankings, but has been ranked as high as No. 271. He has gained valuable experience on the junior circuit, collecting a total of 31 singles victories and 29 doubles victories in his junior career.
"Daniil will be a great fit for our team," Pate added. "I expect him to improve rapidly in our program."
