TUSCALOOSA - Former University of Alabama tennis player Ellis Ferreira ended his run at a Grand Slam event doubles title Friday when he and partner Rick Leach were defeated in the semifinals of the Gentlemen's Over 35 Doubles championships at Wimbledon. The former No. 1 ranked duo on the ATP Tour and 2000 Australian Open Champions were defeated by Australians Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Woodbridge and Woodforde face the USA's T.J. Middleton and David Wheaton in the final.
Ferreira was a three-time doubles All-American at Alabama and an All-Southeastern Conference singles player. He graduated in 1991 and immediately embarked on a professional tennis career that netted 18 professional doubles championships and 15 other trips to the finals.
At Wimbledon Ferreira and Leach opened with a 7-6(5), 7-5 win against Byron Black and Mikael Pernfors, following that with a 6-3,6-4 win against Javier Frana and Leonardo Lavalle and then a 7-5,6-3 win in the quarterfinals against the USA's Jim Grabb and Richie Reneberg.
