TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The men's tennis team welcomed the first member of its 2010 fall class on Thursday as head coach Billy Pate announced the signing of Carlos Taborga.
"We're extremely excited to have Carlos join our program," Pate said. "He has an exceptionally bright future in front of him, and I expect him to contribute right away. I had the pleasure of coaching his brother, Javier, while I was an assistant coach at Notre Dame from 2000-2002, and I'm happy to have another member of the family. He's a high-character person as well as an outstanding tennis player."
Taborga, who hails from La Paz, Bolivia, appeared in the qualifying round of the Davis Cup for his country both as a 16 and 17 year old. In his final year of juniors, Taborga played in International Tennis Federation tournaments where he won back-to-back tournaments in South America. For two years he trained in Madrid, Spain, where he won several junior tournaments. In his first season in the under 14 division, Taborga finished runner-up in the first tournament of the year and won the second national tournament of the season in addition to winning a pair of national tournaments in doubles. He also received a wild card for the Copa Petrobras ATP Challenger in Santiago, Chile.
Taborga's older brother, Javier, was an all-American at Notre Dame from 1999-2002. He competed in a pair of ITA All-American Championships along with one ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship. In addition, Javier was a three-time NCAA Doubles Championship qualifier while making an appearance in the NCAA Singles Championships once.
