BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Nikko Madregallejo
was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for men's tennis, which was announced by the league office on Wednesday.
"Nikko has significantly improved over the course of the season and last weekend's results are a testament to his hard work and growth," said Alabama head coach George Husack. "I'm happy for him and excited to watch him compete with passion throughout the remainder of the year."
Madregallejo, from Monrovia, Calif., went 2-0 in singles last week, which played an integral part in the Crimson Tide's victories over No. 26 Vanderbilt and No. 13 Kentucky. He overcame a significant loss in his first set to the Commodores' Rhys Johnson to come back and clinch the team win by a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Two days later, Madregallejo found himself in another battle on court four and grinded out a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory to award Alabama its third point of the match. He currently leads the team with five singles wins against SEC opponents this season.
