TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The men's tennis team (11-5, 2-2 SEC) is set to continue Southeastern Conference play on the road this weekend when it travels to Auburn to take on the rival Tigers (10-4, 2-2 SEC) on Saturday. Matches will begin at 1 p.m. CT at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
After dropping its first two conference matches against No. 13 Mississippi and No. 10 Mississippi State, the men bounced back last weekend to roll past Arkansas and LSU, defeating them both 6-1. Alabama continues to get excellent play from its two ranked players in freshman Becker O'Shaughnessey, No. 79, and senior Jarryd Botha, No. 58, who have both won five matches in a row, with wins against ranked opponents for each. Junior Daniil Proskura has also been impressive, posting an undefeated record from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions in singles, 2-0 and 11-0, respectively, and also clinching both matches last weekend against Arkansas and LSU.
In addition to its singles rankings, the Tide also has two of its three doubles teams ranked nationally in the current ITA rankings, with Botha and sophomore David Vieyra coming in at No. 72, as well as O'Shaughnessey and Proskura at No. 75.
Auburn is coming off a weekend where they too defeated LSU and Arkansas to earn its first two SEC wins of the season. The Tigers defeated LSU, 5-2, and then dominated the Razorbacks, 6-1.
Auburn currently has three players ranked nationally in singles in the ITA standings, with senior Andreas Mies at No. 46, sophomore Lukas Ollert at No. 85 and junior Daniel Cochrane at No. 86. The Tigers also have the No. 3 doubles team in the nation with the duo of Mies and Cochrane.
The Tide has not defeated the Tigers since 2009 but does hold the all-time series lead with a 55-31-1 advantage.
