March 7, 2013
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The men's tennis team (9-5, 0-2 SEC) will play its first Southeastern Conference road match of the season when it takes on the Arkansas Razorbacks (11-3, 0-2 SEC) in Fayetteville on Friday at 1:30 p.m. CT. The Crimson Tide will then return home for a showdown with LSU (5-4, 0-2 SEC), which will be played simultaneously with the women's match against the Tigers at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday.
Alabama is coming off a tough opening weekend of conference play, where it was edged out in two hard-fought matches against No. 13 Mississippi, 4-3, and No. 10 Mississippi State, 4-2.
The Tide has gotten solid play from the top of its singles lineup as senior Jarryd Botha, junior Daniil Proskura and freshman Becker O'Shaughnessey have each already reached 10-plus wins in the dual match season. The three of them have also posted a combined nine wins against ranked opponents with the biggest being Botha's straight-set defeat over fifth-ranked Jonas Lutjen of Mississippi. In addition, Botha and O'Shaughnessey are both currently ranked nationally in singles with Botha coming in at No. 100 and O'Shaughnessey at No. 85.
Arkansas dropped its first two SEC matches last weekend as well, falling 5-2 to No. 6 Kentucky and 6-1 to No. 25 Vanderbilt. The Razorbacks have one player ranked nationally in singles with senior Gregoire Lehmann taking up the No. 125 spot.
LSU also went 0-2 during the conference opening weekend, with losses to the Commodores, 4-3, and Wildcats, 4-0. The Tigers boast a doubles pair ranked nationally, with the duo of sophomore Chris Simpson and senior Stefan Szacinski at No. 41.
The Tide leads the overall series against Arkansas 14-9, including a 6-1 victory last season in Tuscaloosa. LSU holds the edge over Alabama in the all-time series with a record of 35-20. The Tide's last win against the Tigers came in 2010, by a score of 4-3.
