Happy February Crimson Tide Tennis Fans,
How quickly the days, weeks and months go by once the season gets underway but that means one step closer to warmer weather which is a good thing. Last week was bit unusual as we saw snow and ice in Tuscaloosa which shut down school and businesses for a couple of days. It didn't impact our training times but did force us to remain indoors to prepare for an outdoor event with Texas. Be that as it may, Bama flew to Austin prepared for a battle with the Longhorns.
The day after celebrating Becker's 20th birthday, the Crimson Tide came within a couple of points of jumping out to an early 1-0 lead on the Horns. We dropped a tough match at the #3 slot as Saxon and Andrew couldn't quite recover from a couple of early set breaks of serve. Nikko and Dani at #1 were up 6-4 in a tiebreaker against the #5 team in the country (Glasspool & Hess-Olesen) while Becker and Stuart were also in a tug-a-war tiebreak against their opponents. After a mini-break at 5-5 and ultimately a missed return at 6-5 serving, Texas clinched the doubles point at the #3 position leaving Alabama with an early 0-1 deficit.
Going into singles we felt good about our match-ups and as the saying goes, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. Well, like I said, it's not how you start, it's how you finish...did the record skip? I think Texas felt the same way and really took it to us. They are a very good team and it showed. No excuses on this end, but a simple lesson to be learned - keep improving, with the eyes on the improvement and not the results. Wins will come and as we've seen a couple of times this season and at the Sugar Bowl, losses will be there too.
So it was back to Tuscaloosa for a day off on Sunday and then back at it on Monday. We've had a great week of training thus far and really excited to play in front of a home crowd. This weekend we welcome two very good teams to campus in #29 Oklahoma State and #7 Oklahoma. There will be a promotion for each match - on Saturday it's Big Al's Kid's Club Day for Oklahoma State that includes Big Al on site for high fives, hugs and pics and a post-match hit-around with the Bama players, while on Sunday against the Sooners, there will be FREE BREAKFAST served to all fans compliments of the Hampton Inn.
We look forward to having you provide some home cooking in the stands this weekend and enjoy the excitement that is Alabama Tennis.
