TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
The men's tennis team heads to Malibu, Calif., for ITA Kick-Off Weekend where it will first face 16th-ranked California on Friday, Jan. 24, at 3 p.m. CT. The Tide will then take on either No. 12 Pepperdine or San Diego, depending on how the teams fare on Friday. All matches will be played at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
The winner of both matches earns a spot in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship, which will be played in Houston Feb. 14-17.
Alabama dominated its opponents last weekend, going 3-0 in convincing fashion, dropping only a single match against all three teams the Tide went up against. No. 51 Becker O'Shaughnessey went 2-0 on the day, defeating UAB's Rafael Rondino and Troy's Mansingh Athare handily, while No. 14 Daniil Proskura got a win against a ranked opponent against UAB's No. 88 Chris Helliar.
Cal opened its season on Tuesday, defeating San Francisco, 4-0, in Berkeley. The Golden Bears have two players ranked in singles in Campbell Johnson and Andre Goransson who are ranked No. 74 and No. 85, respectively. Pepperdine also comes in at 1-0, after beating Washington on the road, 5-2. The Waves boast two players ranked in singles with No. 33 Alex Sarkissian and No. 58 David Sofaer. San Diego will be playing its first dual matches of the season in Malibu. The Tide and Toreros met in the first round of the NCAA Championship in 2013, where San Diego came away with a 4-3 win. The Toreros have one ranked singles player in Clarke Spinosa, who comes in at No. 27 in the nation.
