TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The men's tennis team earned six wins Friday on the first day of play at the 2010 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships being hosted at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. The Crimson Tide picked up three of its wins in singles with the remaining three victories coming in doubles.
"I was fairly pleased with the way we ended the day in doubles," Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. "We have a couple of guys that need to get healthy and, unfortunately, are not at 100 percent."
The day opened with singles play where seven Tide players were in action. Junior Vikram Reddy picked up a win for Alabama in the round of 64 defeating Louisiana at Lafayette freshman Ted Nilsson 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Jarryd Botha and freshman Carlos Taborga also earned wins in singles with Botha tallying a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tulane sophomore Rodrigo Rappaccioli, while Taborga recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Southern Miss freshman Alec Doleac. In his second match of the day, Taborga would fall 6-4, 6-4 to Mississippi State freshman Zach White.
"We did have some good performances in singles from Vikram (Reddy) and Jarryd (Botha)," Pate added. "Both of them have been showing good progress the last few weeks at practice. They'll have some tough competition on Saturday, and it will be interesting to see how they fare."
Juniors Ricky Doverspike and Michael Thompson and sophomore Ian Chadwell all had byes in the round of 128 but would fall in the round of 64. Thompson dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to Tulane freshman Takuma Ohashi. Doverspike fell 6-2, 6-1 to LSU junior Tom Knights, and Chadwell was forced to bow out with an injury after falling behind 7-5, 1-0 to Troy sophomore Anan Rouchdi. The final singles competitor for Alabama was senior Trey Walston who was topped by Southern Miss freshman Paulo Alvarado 7-5, 6-3.
In doubles play, the Tide advanced two teams in the main draw on to the round 16. In round of 64 action, Taborga and Thompson took care of business with an 8-5 win over UAB senior Dan Cornei and freshman Chris Helliar. The Alabama pair, however, fell in its second match of the day to South Alabama juniors Hanno Bartsch and Christian Kuehne 8-6. Two other Alabama duos won doubles matches on Friday with Doverspike and Reddy taking down Auburn sophomores Davis Taylor and Michael Wardell 8-3, and Botha and Walston beating South Alabama junior Dauw Kruger and freshman Parker Allen 8-3.
Saturday will consist of two rounds of singles, both main draw and consolation, followed by two rounds of doubles. Matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT.
