Tide Moves on to Semifinals in Singles and Doubles at Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. - The men's tennis team had another encouraging day of play at the 2012 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships as the Crimson Tide collected five wins on Saturday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. Alabama will be represented in the main draw semifinals on Sunday with Becker O'Shaughnessey in singles and David Vieyra and Daniil Proskura in doubles.
O'Shaughnessey knocked off his third straight seeded opponent in singles, topping Mississippi State's Malte Stropp, who is also ranked 47th in the nation, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
In doubles, O'Shaughnessey and partner Jarryd Botha took down the tournament's No. 1 seed and the No. 2 team in the nation in Mississippi's Nik Scholtz and Jonas Lutjen, 9-7, before suffering a 9-7 loss to Southern Miss' Matt Frost and Andrew Goodwin in the quarterfinals. Vieyra and Proskura battled through a pair of close matches to advance in doubles, beating Mississippi State's Ethan Wilkinson and Zach White, 8-6, before grinding out a 9-8(4) victory against Samford's Elliott Barnwell and Garrison Laduca. Brian Conlon and Stuart Kenyon also picked up a win by virtue of a walkover versus South Alabama's Shaynne Vaezzadeh and Daniel Leitner but fell in their next match to Mississippi State's James Chaudry and Stefen Vinti, 8-2.
Matches will resume on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT with the singles semifinals. The doubles semifinals will be played at 2 p.m. CT.
