Tide Picks up Five Wins on Thursday at Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. - The men's tennis team collected five wins on day one of the 2012 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The Crimson Tide won its lone doubles match of the day and picked up four victories in singles.
The day started with the first round of singles, which were played indoors due to weather. Alabama had five players with first-round byes, while Brian Conlon, Carlos Taborga and Stuart Kenyon were all in action. Conlon recorded the Tide's first win of the day, coming back from a loss in his opening set to beat Troy's Patrick Eichler, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Both Taborga and Conlon would drop their matches, moving on to the consolation draw.
In the second round, eighth-seeded Daniil Proskura, No. 12 seed Jarryd Botha and Becker O'Shaughnessey would each win their matches to advance to the round of 32 in the main draw. Proskura took down Idan Sneddon from Tulane, 6-1, 6-4, while Botha posted a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Mississippi State's Ethan Wilkinson. O'Shaughnessey also recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win, beating Troy's Daniel Bustamante. The Tide's remaining three matches all resulted in losses as Conlon fell to the tournament's No. 10 seed in Auburn's Lucas Lopasso, 6-3, 7-5, while Rens van der Vis dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Southern Mississippi's Andrew Goodwin and David Vieyra a 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5) loss to LSU's Mark Bowtell.
In doubles, Taborga and van der Vis teamed up for the victory, beating Troy's Tommy Cundy and Tadju Davis, 8-4.
Matches will resume on Friday at 8:30 a.m. CT with singles.
