TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Crimson Tide men’s tennis team picked up nine wins on the second day of action at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships, which are being hosted at The University of Alabama. The Tide remains in both the singles and doubles main draws with Becker O'Shaughnessey advancing to the singles quarterfinals while three of Alabama’s doubles teams made it to the round of 16.
O'Shaughnessey and Daniil Proskura were first to earn a win for the Tide, beating out Troy’s Sami Ghrobel and Mansingh Athare, 8-1, in doubles. From there, Sean Donohue and Nikko Madregallejo paired up to top Nicholls State’s Bernard Wezeman and Lukas Clemens, 8-5, while Hayes Brewer and Andrew Goodwin tacked on an 8-3 victory over Evan Karatzas and Kiernan Cronin, also of Nicholls State.
In singles, O’Shaughnessey rolled to a pair of wins in straight sets, beating out Auburn’s Dennis Lengsfeld and Mississippi State’s Tassilo Schmid. Kenyon, also competing in the main draw, won his first match on the day against Alex Van Cott of Tulane before falling to eighth-seeded Dan Cochrane of Auburn.
The Tide went 3-0 in the singles consolation draw with Donohue picking up two wins and Madregallejo adding on another.
Match play resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the two rounds of doubles. Singles action will follow.
