OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The men’s tennis team opened up its 2010 fall season on Friday at the Olympia Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational, picking up three wins on the first day of the tournament.

"Though we didn't have as many wins today as we would’ve liked, we competed very well and played strong in certain spots,” Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. “We also had multiple match points in a couple of matches that we didn't convert. We have some areas to work on and are excited to get back on the courts in the morning."

The Crimson Tide fielded a total of five different doubles combinations on the day in six total matches. Junior Michael Thompson and sophomore Ian Chadwell collected the biggest win on the day, taking down No. 39 junior Casey Watt and senior Stephen Havens of Notre Dame 8-4. Freshman Carlos Taborga and senior Trey Walston also teamed up for a victory over a Fighting Irish duo, winning 8-6 over senior Daniel Stahl and freshman Greg Andrews.

Notre Dame was able to claim four doubles wins over Alabama on the day. Freshman Billy Pecor and senior Tyler Davis fought past juniors Ricky Doverspike and Vikram Reddy 9-8(4), while sophomore Blas Moros and senior Matt Johnson cruised past sophomore Jarryd Botha and Walston 8-3. The Fighting Irish got revenge on the pair of Chadwell and Thompson, as Havens and Davis defeated them 8-4. Finally, the duo of Watt and Pecor won a 9-7 battle over Doverspike and Botha.

The Tide also contested seven singles matches on the day, but was only able to come away with one victory, as Doverspike delivered a 7-5, 6-3 win over sophomore Zach Leslie of Wake Forest.

Three other matches involving Alabama players went to three sets, but none of them were able to claim victory. Illinois’ senior Connor Roth was able to hold off Reddy 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2. Thompson suffered a heartbreaking loss to sophomore Bruno Abdelnour of Illinois, falling 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(7). Chadwell’s was also dropped in three sets, losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to junior Sam Keeton of Notre Dame.

The final three matches for the Tide resulted in straight set losses to players from Notre Dame. Botha was beaten by Havens 6-3, 6-4, while Taborga fell to Pecor 6-4, 6-3. Walston was also taken down by Davis 6-1, 6-3.

Alabama will be back in action at the Olympia Fields Country Club Saturday in both singles and doubles play.
