ATHENS, Ga. - The men's tennis team won three more matches on the final day at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, highlighted by junior Andrew Goodwin's pair of wins to advance him to the finals of the division II singles draw. Over the course of the three-day tournament, the Crimson Tide collected 19 victories with 14 in singles and five in doubles.
Goodwin came back after a first-set loss to Virginia Tech's Aaron Gomez to win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, in the quarterfinals before downing Suresh Eswaran of Vanderbilt, 6-0, 6-3, in the semifinals. Goodwin would then meet UAB's Chris Helliar in the finals, both playing their third singles match of the day. The Blazer senior would prevail in the finals, winning 6-0, 6-2.
Alabama freshman Saxon Buehning also picked up a win in the consolation draw, beating Georgia State's Rafael Racy, 6-2, 7-6.
The Tide returns to action next weekend with four members of the squad heading to California for the Napa Valley Tennis Classic, while the remaining members travel to Nashville, Tenn., for the SEC Fall Championships.
