ATHENS, Ga. - The men's tennis team got off to a hot start at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, winning eight matches on Friday. The Crimson Tide collected five of its victories in singles, while the remaining three wins were earned in doubles.
In the Division I singles draw, Alabama's three representatives, including sophomore Becker O'Shaughnessey and freshmen Hayes Brewer and Nikko Madregallejo, each advanced to Saturday's second round. Juniors Andrew Goodwin and Stuart Kenyon, playing in the Division II singles draw, won their respective matches in straight sets to also move on in the main draw.
In doubles, two of the Tide's three duos remain alive in their respective main draws. Freshman Sean Donohue and Madregallejo had a bye in the first round before posting an 8-4 victory in the second, while freshman Saxon Buehning and Kenyon teamed up to win 8-3 in their second round matchup after being handed a bye in the first. Also tacking on a win in doubles were Brewer and Goodwin.
Matches will resume on Saturday morning with the doubles round of 16. Singles play will follow.
