TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The 42nd-ranked men’s tennis team fell to No. 32 Mississippi 5-2 on Friday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. With the loss, the Crimson Tide moves to 9-9 overall and 2-7 against Southeastern Conference opponents, while the Rebels improve to 11-7 overall and 5-4 in the SEC.

“It was a hard-fought match today, and Mississippi played well,” Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. “I am, again, proud of the effort we gave today. I feel like it sounds like a broken record, but we are very close to being good and getting these wins. It is just one point here and there. We have some guys playing well, but it seems like we have not had one day when we have put it together collectively against a good team. We are just going to keep plugging, and I am confident it will turn for us.”

Doubles play started off in favor of Mississippi as Alabama’s court two duo of juniors Vikram Reddy and Michael Thompson fell 8-4 to senior Tucker Vorster and sophomore Jonas Lutjen. The Tide rebounded quickly with an 8-5 win on court three with senior Trey Walston and freshman Daniil Proskura topping Rebel sophomore Adrian Forberg Skogeng and freshman Johan Backstrom. Despite a strong comeback from being down 6-3, junior Ricky Doverspike and sophomore Jarryd Botha would end up being edged by the nation’s eighth-ranked team of juniors Chris and Marcel Thiemann, 8-6, to give the Rebels the doubles point.

Mississippi struck quickly in singles as well as on court one as No. 40 Marcel Thiemann defeated Doverspike 6-2, 6-2. Court three was next to finish, which gave the Tide its first point of the match as Botha downed Chris Thiemann in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The Rebels would regain their two point lead as 108th-ranked Vorster defeated Proskura on court two, 7-5, 6-3.

Soon after, Mississippi sealed the win on court four as Lutjen topped Reddy 7-5, 6-3. Alabama sophomore Ian Chadwell finished next as he defeated Mississippi’s Backstrom 7-5, 6-4 on court six. Skogeng of Mississippi made the final match score 5-2 in the Rebel’s favor as he edged out Thompson on court six with a final score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Next up, the Tide hosts No. 25 Mississippi State on Sunday, April 10. First serve is set for 1 p.m. CT at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
