LAS VEGAS - The No. 18 men's tennis team won four of eight matches, three in singles and one in doubles, Sunday against opponents from 73rd-ranked UNLV during the final day of competition at the UNLV Invitational. In addition sophomore Ricky Doverspike was crowned Flight Two Champion in singles, while senior Saketh Myneni and sophomore Michael Davis earned championship honors for Flight One Doubles. In addition, the 34th-ranked pair of senior Houssam Yassine and junior Trey Walston won the Flight Three Doubles title.
"We came out a little flat today in doubles compared to the last two days," head coach Billy Pate said. "We did, however, have some more bright spots in certain areas, and Ian Chadwell and Jarryd Botha are gaining experience and confidence each day. It was great to get some matches under our belts with tough competition. The weather was ideal and really allowed us to maximize our time here."
In singles, sophomore Michael Thompson, who is ranked 123rd, had an easy time with UNLV senior Matthew Kunkel 6-2, 6-1. Freshmen Ian Chadwell and Jarryd Botha also earned straight-set wins against their Rebel counterparts with Chadwell beating freshman Kasper Konyves 6-2, 6-4 and Botha downing freshman Charlie Alvarado 6-0, 6-1.
No. 62 Myneni dropped his singles match to sophomore Mehdi Bouras 6-4, 6-2. Also competing in singles for the Tide on Sunday was Doverspike who lost 6-1, 6-4 to sophomore Attila Toth.
In doubles, Bouras and senior Luca Barlocchi took down Myneni and Davis 8-1, while Toth and Kunkel won 8-5 over Doverspike and Chadwell. No. 34 Yassine and Walston notched the lone win for Alabama in doubles with an 8-4 victory over Alvarado and Konyves.
The Tide returns to the courts next weekend when it heads to Atlanta for the SEC Indoor Championships. Match play begins Friday, Jan. 15 and ends Monday, Jan. 18.
