Paul Thoesen kicks off his second season on the men's tennis coaching staff where he serves as volunteer assistant coach. Thoesen played an instrumental role in helping the Crimson Tide advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in his first season under Coach Pate.
In the six years prior to Alabama, Thoesen had been working with state, southern, nationally, and internationally ranked juniors. In that time, he coached over 25 players that received scholarships at the Division I level, two of which are currently at the University of Alabama.
From 2006-2008, Thoesen was the owner and director of Birmingham's Elite Tennis Academy (BETA) at the Lakeshore Foundation Tennis Center. His program consisted of over 75 players with more than 30 BETA players holding Southern and/or National rankings. In that time, Thoesen was also named as the Team Alabama Southerns Coach for two consecutive years. Since arriving in Alabama, he has coached Alabama state qualifying champions in the Boys 18s, 16s and 12s divisions and the Girls 18s, 14s and 12s divisions.
Thoesen, a native of Marietta, Ga., spent two years at Birmingham Southern College where he earned a scholarship and was part of the men's tennis team. He is currently finishing up work on his undergraduate degree at Alabama and plans on beginning his master's. As a junior player, Thoesen was nationally ranked in both the USTA Boys 16s and 18s divisions. He advanced to the Round of 16 at the USTA National Clay Courts and Indoor Doubles.
