Ricky Doverspike Named Assistant Women's Tennis Coach at Alabama

Former No. 1 player for the Tide joins the women's team after serving as a volunteer with the men

Ricky Doverspike returns for his second season as volunteer assistant coach of the Crimson Tide men's tennis team. Doverspike joined the staff following his playing days, where he lettered with the squad from 2008-12.

Doverspike's transition from player to coach was a seamless one with the team respecting and looking to their former teammate for guidance from the start. In his first season on staff, Alabama returned to the NCAA Championship tournament and roped in four more wins than it had the season prior. In addition, the Tide had several individuals recognized nationally, regionally and on the conference level as Jarryd Botha and David Vieyra earned All-America status in doubles, Botha and Becker O'Shaughnessey All-SEC honors and Daniil Proskura the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award as well as the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award for the ITA's southern region.

Doverspike enjoyed a solid playing career, amassing 66 wins in singles and another 82 victories in doubles over the four-year span. During his freshman campaign, Doverspike went undefeated in singles play throughout the dual match season, with five of those wins coming against ranked teams. In 2010, he was the only player on the squad to amass 20-plus wins in both singles and doubles, leading the team in singles victories with 23. As a senior, Doverspike was named to the All-SEC Second Team and advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championships with Botha.

Doverspike earned his undergraduate degree in management in 2012 and went on to complete his master's degree in sport management in 2013. He was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll all four years in addition to being a member of the Golden Key Honor Society and an ITA Scholar-Athlete.
