FALL 2008:
Earned the No. 106 preseason singles ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association...Competed in his first match after sitting out last season on Sept. 19 where he earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Army's Phil Muhawi...Finished with five wins and only two losses in singles competition...Defeated No. 84 Nick Cromydas of Vanderbilt 6-3, 6-2 at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships.

2007 (SENIOR):

2006 (JUNIOR):
Named to the SEC 2nd Team. Ended the season with a No. 71 national ranking. Posted a team-high 27 singles victories, tying him for sixth all-time for singles wins during a season. First Alabama player to earn 20 singles victories this season from the 1,3 and 4 slots. Won a team-high 13 consecutive singles matches from Oct. 26-March 2, all but one in straight sets. Went 13-3 from the No. 3 singles slot. Teamed up with Javier Bes in doubles, posting a 16-6 overall record. Won 10 consecutive matches with Bes to start the spring season. Opened the spring season with nine consecutive singles victories. Defeated three ranked individuals including No. 9 Luis Flores of Georgia, 7-6, 6-4. Went 6-4 in singles and 3-3 in doubles during the fall season. Earned victories in all four of of his singles matches at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships. Claimed two doubles wins in the Crimson Tide fall Championships. Recorded one victory in both singles and doubles at the ITA Southeast Regionals.

Began the season with three straight victories and ended by winning six straight matches. Played primarily at the No. 4 and 5 singles positions, with an undefeated 6-0 record at the five slot. Teamed with Javier Bes for an 8-6 victory in doubles over No. 44 Adrians Zguns and Blake Strode of Arkansas. Posted a 13-5 record in doubles play with teammate Bes. Joined Bes to tally a 7-1 record in SEC doubles matches. Finished the fall with a season record of 2-7 in singles.

2004 (FRESHMAN):
Became 20th Alabama player to win 20+ matches. Won first nine collegiate singles matches. Won five SEC matches as a freshman. Posted 7-2 record at No. 4 singles. Won four pre-qualifying matches and one qualifying match to post 5-1 record at prestigious ITA All-American Championships.

Personal Highlights:
2004 National Open (Stone Mountain) Champion. Singles finalist of ITF in Trinidad & Tobago in 2003. Doubles finalist in Costa Rican ITF event in 2003. Reached Gator Bowl National Championships finals. Ranked as high as No. 12 nationally after winning National Open in Stone Mtn. Ga. in May 2004. Finished at No. 47 nationally in USTA Boy's 18 rankings.

Born July 4, 1985. Parents are William and Colleen Mertz. Siblings are Shannon, Kelly. Billy is from an extremely athletic family. Shannon plays basketball at Catholic Univ. and Kelly plays high school basketball. William Mertz is a high school basketball coach.
