NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Alabama men's golf team looks to wrap up its 2013 fall schedule with an unblemished record when it begins play at the 2013 Gifford Collegiate Championship at the par-70, 6,985-yard Pelican Hill on Monday.
The Crimson Tide opened the fall season with wins at the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational, the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. It marks just the second time in school history (2006) the Tide has opened the season with three straight wins. Alabama, the reigning SEC and national champions, has won nine straight events dating back to the spring.
The first 36 holes (two rounds) will be played on Monday followed by the final round on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The field consists of 10 teams with the No. 1 Tide joined by host and 13th-ranked UCLA, No. 6 Wash-ington, Southern California, Oregon, Northwestern, Tennessee, Coastal Carolina, Lamar and SMU.
A trio of seniors leads the way for Alabama, including the nation's top-ranked player Trey Mullinax, the world's No. 1 amateur Cory Whitsett and No. 16 Bobby Wyatt. Joining the Tide's senior trio is true freshman Robby Shelton, who is currently ranked sixth in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and sophomore Tom Lovelady.
Mullinax leads the team with a 69.11 scoring average, while Shelton is second at 70.56, Wyatt third at 71.11, Lovelady fourth at 71.83 and Whitsett fifth at 72.22.
Alabama will be paired with UCLA for the first day and is scheduled be begin its first round at 9:38 a.m. (CST). The Crimson Tide's second round is slated to get underway at 1:38 p.m. (CST).
