VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. - The defending national champion Alabama men's golf team begins defense of Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate title on Monday at the par-70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Country Club.

The 2013 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate will consist of 36 holes (two rounds) on Monday beginning at 7:30 a.m. followed by a third and final round that is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Crimson Tide has won five of the past seven Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate titles, including last season, and enter the event first nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.

The Jerry Pate features a strong field in 2013 that includes No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 16 UNLV, No. 17 Vanderbilt, No. 26 Texas, No. 28 Arkansas and No. 29 Auburn along with Arizona, Mississippi State, UAB, UNC Charlotte and UTSA.

Alabama's starting lineup will include seniors Cory Whitsett, Bobby Wyatt and Trey Mullinax along with true freshman Robby Shelton and sophomore Tom Lovelady. The Tide captured team honors in the season's first tournament, the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, back in September.

The Jerry Pate Intercollegiate began back in 1986 and is named for the most successful professional golfer in Crimson Tide history. Pate currently plays on the Champions Tour and is active in the team selection for the tournament.

Since its inception, the JPNI has seen some powerful names in the world of golf win its individual title. Current PGA Tour golfers, Michael Thompson, Bud Cauley, Hunter Mahan, Jordan Spieth, Rory Sabbatini and D.J. Trahan have all won medalist honors at the Pate, and arguably the greatest golfer of all-time, Tiger Woods, won the JPNI in 1994 while competing for Stanford. David Kirkpatrick (1991), Joseph Sykora (2006), Mark Harrell (2007), Hunter Hamrick (2009) and Justin Thomas (2012) all took medalist honors for Alabama.
