Chattanooga shot 5-under par as a team Saturday to overtake East Tennessee State for the lead going into Sunday's final round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate. The Mocs, who were T-4th after the first round, have a three-shot lead after 36 holes.
Alabama tumbled from ninth to 14th place. The Crimson Tide, which is debuting three freshmen here after graduating a veteran team last season, shot 9-over par on the par 72 course at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga., which is near Dalton. Coupled with the 295 it shot in the opening round on Friday, Alabama is at 16-over going into Sunday (295-297/592).
True freshman Bud Cauley and fifth-year senior Matt Hughes have Alabama's best standings going into Sunday. Both are among a tie at 26th at 2-over par after two rounds. Cauley shot 72-74/146. Hughes, who is from Dalton, carded 71-75/146.
Tied at 34th for Alabama is Montgomery's Matthew Swan who made par Saturday. His scores are 76-72/148. And Alabama's two redshirt freshmen, Montgomery's Hunter Hamrick and Tuscaloosa's Phillip Weaver, are among a tie at 65th at 8-over par. Both shot identical round scores of 76-76/152.
Leading the tournament is Clemson's Kyle Stanley who shot 6-under Saturday and is 5-under for the weekend. He shot 73-66/139. Four golfers are among a tie at 2nd at 3-under par.
