TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
The No. 1 Alabama men's golf team travels to the Carpet Capital Collegiate this weekend to open the 2012-13 season on the par-72, 7,012-yard The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.
"First off it's a new year and you always get excited this time of year." Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "With the talented guys we have coming back, and the standard that they have and strive to have, as a coach you always look forward to the start of the season."
Golfweek also joined the coaches' poll in tabbing the Crimson Tide as the nation's preseason No. 1 team. Golfweek listed three Crimson Tide golfers among their top-10 nationally. Sophomore Justin Thomas, who was the National Player of the Year last season, was ranked No. 1 while teammates Bobby Wyatt and Cory Whitsett were ranked fifth and eighth, respectively.
The 54-hole tournament begins Friday and runs through Sunday. Joining No. 1 Alabama at this year's Carpet Capital field includes No. 6 Auburn, Chattanooga, No. 24 Clemson, No. 19 Georgia, No. 7 Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, LSU, Middle Tennessee State University, North Carolina, No. 15 North Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, No. 2 and defending national champions Texas and Wake Forest.
Last season at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, the Crimson Tide finished fourth, while Justin Thomas captured medalist honors, carding a 10-under-par 206, in his first collegiate tournament.
This year head coach Jay Seawell will call on senior Scott Strohmeyer, Whitsett, Wyatt, Thomas and redshirt freshman Tom Lovelady to start this weekend, while Trey Mullinax will compete as an individual.
