The 2014 Palmer Cup teams for both the United States and Europe were announced Thursday on the Golf Channel. The Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 26-28 at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England.
Alabama's Trey Mullinax and Robby Shelton were named to the United States 10-man squad along with Stanford's Cameron Wilson, Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans, Oklahoma State's Wyndham Clark, California's Brandon Hagy, USC's Rico Hoey, SMU's Bryson Dechambeau, Oglethrope's Anthony Maccaglia and LSU's Stewart Jolly. California's Steve Desimone will serve as Team USA's coach in 2014.
Mullinax, a senior from Birmingham, is third on the Alabama squad in 2014 with a 71.22 scoring average while ranking eighth in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and 14th in the Golfstat.com rankings. He has five top-10 finishes in nine starts, including medalist honors at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational.
Shelton, a true freshman from Wilmer, Ala., leads the Crimson Tide in scoring average at 70.48 and is 17-under par for the season. He has two medalist honors with wins at the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational and the Puerto Rico Classic to go along with six top five finishes in nine events. Shelton ranks second in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and fourth in the Golfstat.com ranking.
Alabama has now played multiple players on the Palmer Cup team in each of the past two years and has had a player represented on the team for the past three years. The 2013 team led by Crimson Tide coach Jay Seawell featured Cory Whitsett, Bobby Wyatt and Justin Thomas. Thomas also played on the 2012 team.
