TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama junior Cory Whitsett was named both the Golfweek and Southeastern Conference Player of the Week following his victory at the Aggie Invitational this past weekend in Bryan, Texas.
It was the second straight win for the Houston, Texas, native as well as the second Player of the Week honors in as many tournaments. He also won Golfweek and SEC honors after winning the Linger Longer Invitational.
Whitsett shot 8-under-par 208 with a final round 70 in the Aggie Invitational to edge teammate Bobby Wyatt by one shot and Scott Strohmeyer by two shots. He opened with back-to-back rounds of 69 on the tournament's first day.
It was Whitsett's fifth-career tournament victory, which moved him into a tie for second in school history with Steve Lowery. Whitsett ranks third in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and now leads the team with a 70.96 scoring average. He is a cumulative 15-under-par for the season and 44 under in his last six events.
Alabama returns to action on April 19-21, looking to defend its title at the SEC Championships at the Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simon's Island, Ga.
