GREENSBORO, Ga. - Following a week of rest, the University of Alabama's top ranked men's golf team returns to action Saturday at the Linger Longer Invitational on the par-72, 7,063-yard Great Waters Golf Club at Reynolds Plantation.
The tournament beginning with 36 holes on Saturday followed by the final 18 holes Sunday. The Crimson Tide is looking to capture their fourth straight title at the event. Senior Cory Whitsett is also looking for his fourth individual title at the Linger Longer after winning in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
The Tide's lineup for the weekend remains the same for the second straight tournament, with the senior trio Whitsett, Trey Mullinax, and Bobby Wyatt, along with sophomore Tom Lovelady and the nation's No.2 ranked player Robby Shelton. Making his career debut, freshman Robby Prater from Birmingham, Ala. will compete as an individual.
The 15 team field includes Charlotte, Chattanooga, No. 26 Clemson, Furman, No. 2 Georgia, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Mercer, Michigan State, North Florida, No. 15 Oklahoma, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, and Yale.
A year ago, Whitsett clinched medalist honors after a 2-under final round that highlighted his stellar 7-under performance on the weekend. Alabama cruised to a 16-shot victory (at 16-under par) and placed four players in top 10 with Wyatt tying for fifth and Mullinax tied for 10th with former Tide All-American Justin Thomas.
All of the Tide's players traveling to Greensboro with the exception of Prater have scoring averages under 73. Shelton leads the team 70.67 scoring average over 21 rounds this season.
Alabama is scheduled to begin play at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) and will be playing with Georgia, Mercer and Kennesaw State.
