NEWPORT Beach, Calif. - The Alabama men's golf team continued its streak of holding the lead for the 10th and 11th straight rounds Monday to take the 36-hole lead at the Gifford Collegiate at Pelican Hill.
The Crimson Tide posted a 5-under 275 to lead by two shots after 18 holes and followed it up with a 276 (-4) in the afternoon for a three-shot lead at 9-under 551 heading into the final round. UA has led at the conclusion of all 11 rounds this season and will be looking for its 10th straight win, dating back to last spring, on Tuesday.
Northwestern is on the Tide's heels at 6-under 554 with SMU and Southern California tied for third at even-par 560. Washington (+1, 561) is fifth and UCLA (+4, 564) is sixth.
Bobby Wyatt paced Alabama Monday with rounds of 3-under 67 and 2-under 68. He is tied for fourth place at 5-under 135, three shots off the lead of SMU's Harry Higgs (66-66/132). Wyatt made nine birdies over the first 36 holes with two bogeys and a double bogey.
The nation's No. 1 golfer according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, Trey Mullinax, was one shot back of Wyatt in sixth place at 4-under 136. He opened with a 67 and followed it up with a 69. Cory Whitsett (68-70/138) is tied for ninth and gives Alabama three players inside the top 10 at 2-under 138.
Freshman Robby Shelton is tied for 20th at 2-over 142 after an opening-round 73 was followed by a 1-under 69. Sophomore Tom Lovelady is tied for 25th at 3-over 143 after rounds of 73 and 70. The Crimson Tide will be paired with Northwestern in Tuesday's final round at Pelican Hill.
