The Alabama men's golf team shot 8-over-par 296 in the opening round of the 2012 Isleworth Collegiate Invitational at the par-72, 7,544-yard Isleworth Country Club on Sunday.
The Crimson Tide is in a tie for sixth place, after the 18 holes of play, 12 shots off the lead of top-ranked California, who carded a 4-under 284. Texas is four-shots back at even-over 288 with Illinois (291), New Mexico (293) and LSU (294) rounding out the top five. Central Florida is tied with the Crimson Tide in sixth.
Sophomore Justin Thomas paced the Alabama attack on Sunday with a 1-over-par 73. He had back-to-back bogeys and a birdie on the seventh to make the turn at 1-over 37. He birdied the 10th and bogeyed the 16th on the back nine to finish round one in a tie for 16th.
Juniors Cory Whitsett and Trey Mullinax are both tied for 22nd position after shooting 2-over-par rounds of 74. Bobby Wyatt was Alabama's final counting score at 5-over-par 75. Tom Lovelady was the Tide's drop score at 8-over 78.
California's Michael Kim has the individual lead after shooting 5-under-par 67 with teammate Michael Weaver carding a 68 for a tie for second.
The 2012 Isleworth Collegiate Invitational continues with the second round scheduled for Monday morning and the final round on Tuesday.
