Men's Golf within Striking Distance of Lead at SEC Championships

ST. SIMON'S ISLAND, Ga. - The second-ranked Alabama men's golf team shot the lowest round of the day on Saturday in the second round of the 2013 SEC Championship at the par-70, 6,898-yard Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club to pull within three shots of the lead.

The Crimson Tide shot 5-under-par 275 and trail South Carolina by three shots entering Sunday's final round at 2-under 558. The Gamecocks are 5-under 555 and are led by tournament leader Caleb Sturegon, who is 8-under after 36 holes. Auburn, the first-round leader, is third at 4-over 564 with Texas A&M fourth (566) and Georgia fifth (570).

Junior Cory Whitsett has led the Crimson Tide throughout and is tied for second place at 4-under 136, four shots off the lead. Whitsett, from Houston, Texas, shot 3-under 67 on Saturday, making three birdies in the final four holes. He opened with a 1-under 69 on Friday.

Juniors Bobby Wyatt and Trey Mullinax are tied for eighth at even-par 140. Wyatt fired a 3-under round of 67 on Saturday while Mullinax carded a 1-over 71.

Justin Thomas and Scott Strohmeyer round out the Tide scoring in a tie for 25th at 5-over 145. Strohmeyer, a senior from Auburn, shot even-par 70 to count for UA in round two. Thomas' 73 was dropped from the Alabama scorecard on Saturday.
