Men's Golf In Fourth Through Day One Of 2013 SEC Championship

ST. SIMON'S ISLAND, Ga. – The No. 2 Alabama men’s golf team shot a three-over par 283 on Friday and is in fourth place after the opening round of the 2013 Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

Auburn, ranked No. 19 nationally, leads the 14-team field after carding a five-under par 275 during the opening 18 holes. The Tigers lead No. 30 South Carolina (279) and No. 13 Georgia (281) heading into Saturday’s second round.

The Tide was led on the day by juniors Cory Whitsett and Trey Mullinax, who are in a tie for fifth overall after both carded a round of one-under par 69 on the 6,991-yard par 70 Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course. The duo was two of just 11 student-athletes in the field to shoot under par in Friday’s windy conditions.

Sophomore Justin Thomas shot a two-over par 72 and is in a tie for 23rd, while junior Bobby Wyatt is in 30th with a 73. Senior Scott Strohmeyer rounds out Crimson Tide in a tie for 43rd with a five-over 75.

Thirteen of the 14 teams in this year’s field are ranked among the nation’s top 50, including 10 squads in the top 30, according to Golfstat.com
