BRYAN, Texas - The second-ranked Alabama men's golf team opened up a sizeable lead after two rounds of the 2013 Aggie Invitational on Saturday at The Traditions Club, a par-72, 7,146-yard layout on Saturday.
The Crimson Tide opened with a 10-under-par round of 278 in the first round and followed that up with a 5-under 283 in round two. Alabama is 15-under-par 561 after 36 holes and has a 12-stroke lead over Kent State (-3, 573). No. 4 Washington is third at 1-over 577 after rounds of 295 and 282. Host Texas A&M is fourth at 3-over 579 while No. 5 UCLA is in fifth at 7-over 583.
Cory Whitsett and Scott Strohmeyer are tied for third headed into the final round at 6-under-par 138. Whisett carded back-to-back rounds of 69 while Strohmeyer shot 67 and 71. Strohmeyer had 11 birdies in the first 36 holes while Whisett had 10.
Bobby Wyatt is fifth after two rounds at 5-under-par 139. The Mobile, Ala., native shot even-par 72 in the second round is one shot back of Whitsett and Strohmeyer and two shots back of co-leaders Chris Williams (Washington) and Corey Conners (Kent State), who shot 7-under 137 Saturday.
Both Wyatt and Strohmeyer carded 67s for the opening-round lead. Wyatt got to 5-under after eight holes, including four straight birdies on holes five, six, seven and eight. Strohmeyer made seven birdies on his opening 18 holes.
Whitsett finished his opening round with a 3-under 69 while Justin Thomas was the fourth counting score at 3-over 75. Thomas, from Goshen, Ky., rebounded with a 1-under 71 in round two and is tied for 15th at 2-over 146.
Trey Mullinax's score was dropped from both rounds after shooting a 79 in round one and a 75 in round two. He is 10-over 154 headed into Sunday's final round and tied for 56th.
The remainder of the team leader board has Arkansas (+11, 587) in sixth followed by LSU (+13, 589), Oklahoma (+15, 591), Duke (+17, 593) and Oklahoma State (+20, 596) to round out the top 10.
The Crimson Tide will be paired with paired with Kent State and host Texas A&M on Sunday.
