STATESBORO, Ga. - The University of Alabama men's golf team is tied for eighth place after the opening round of the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational on Friday at the 6,947-yard, par-72 Forest Heights Country Club.
The Crimson Tide shot a 4-over-par 292 and are just seven strokes off leader North Florida (-3, 285). Virginia is in second place at 2-under-par 286 with Mississippi in third place at 1-under-par 287. Auburn (E, 288) and North Carolina State (+1, 289) round out the top five.
Sophomore Hunter Slatton, a native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., paced UA with a 2-under-par round of 70. He cared four birdies and two bogeys on the day, equaling his lowest round of the season. Slatton enters Saturday's second round tied for fourth place individually.
Sophomore Hunter Hamrick is tied for 30th after round one and posted the Tide's second-best score of the day with a 1-over-par 73. He birdied the third hole of the day, but ran into trouble on the back nine with bogeys on holes 10, 12 and 13. Hamrick finished his round on a positive note with Alabama's only birdie on the par-5 finishing hole.
Redshirt freshman Lee Knox, who was playing just 79 miles from his hometown of Augusta, Ga., shot a 2-over-par 74 on Friday and is tied for 36th. Sophomore Bud Cauley was 3-over-par in his first round and is tied for 52nd. Redshirt freshman Scott Strohmeyer was the Tide's No. 5 in round one with a 6-over-par 78 and is tied for 72nd.
Alabama's second round will tee off at 8 a.m. (CDT) on Saturday. The Crimson Tide will play with Vanderbilt and Georgia Southern. Live stats can be found at www.golfstat.com.
