March 10, 2012
The Crimson Tide are 11-over 587 and 14 shots back of tournament leader California (-3, 573). Tournament host UNLV is in second place at 3-over-par 579 with Texas A&M in third at 4-over par. UCLA and Stanford are tied for fourth place at 7-over 583.
Sophomore Cory Whitsett, a native of Houston, Texas, led the Tide in Saturday's second round with a 1-under-par 71. He is joined in a tie for 13th position by freshman Justin Thomas, who carded a 1-over 73 in round two. Both players are even-par 144 headed into Sunday's third and final round.
Sophomore Bobby Wyatt, a native of Mobile, Ala., leads all Alabama golfers after two rounds at 2-under-par 142 in a tie for fourth place. He followed up a 68 in the first round with a 2-over-par 74 in round two, four strokes off the lead of Texas Tech's Logan McCracken at 6-under 138 (66-72--138).
The fourth score on the Southern Highlands layout continues to be the problem for Alabama's third-ranked squad, who were forced to count an 80 in round one and a 77 in Saturday's second round from senior Hunter Hamrick. The Crimson Tide dropped Trey Mullinax's 8-over 80 in round two. Hamrick is tied for 65th individually with Mullinax tied for 75th.
Alabama tees off at 11 a.m. (CDT) Sunday from the first tee at the Southern Highlands Golf Club. The Tide will be playing with TCU and Florida.
