LAS VEGAS - The No. 1 Alabama men's golf team shot 11-over-par 299 in the first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters Friday at the par-72, 7,374-yard Southern Highlands Country Club.
The Crimson Tide is 10 shots back of host UNLV who carded a 1-over-par 289 for the clubhouse lead after 18 holes. No. 2 Oklahoma State is in second place at 5-over 293 with Oklahoma third at 296 and Stanford fourth at 297. UCLA joins Alabama in fifth with TCU in sixth at 301.
Freshman Robby Shelton eagled the 603-yard, par-5 finishing hole to post an even-par 72 in the opening round, which leaves him in a tie for sixth. He played the final six holes at 4-under with birdies on the 13th and 16th holes.
Senior Cory Whitsett also made a move into the top 15 on the back nine and is tied for 11th at 1-over-par 73. The Houston native made the turn at 4-over, but holed out for eagle on the par-4, 506-yard 11th hole and then made back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th. His only blemish on his closing nine was a bogey on the 18th.
Senior Bobby Wyatt is tied for 26th at 4-over 76 while Tom Lovelady is tied for 40th at 6-over 78. Senior Trey Mullinax was the Tide's drop score on Friday with an 80.
Alabama will play Saturday's second round at the Southern Highlands Country Club with UCLA and Stanford.
No. 5 Georgia is tied for ninth after the first round at 22-over 310 while No. 4 California is 12th at 26-over 314, No. 3 Georgia Tech is 13th at 315 and No. 12 Texas A&M is 15th at 321.
