LOS CABOS, Mexico - The top-ranked Alabama men's golf team finished the second round of the SMU Querencia Cabo Collegiate on Monday at the par-71, 6,948-yard Querencia Golf Club in third place just five shots off the lead.

The Crimson Tide rebounded from a sluggish first-round performance Sunday to post an even-par 284 in Monday's second round, cutting into No. 11 Houston's lead at 5-over 573. The Tide also trails Baylor, who shot 4-under 280 in the second round to move into second place. Kentucky is in fourth (+17, 585) with Vanderbilt and SMU tied in fifth (+18, 586).

All five Alabama golfers shot between 70 and 75 in round two with seniors Trey Mullinax and Cory Whitsett bouncing back from their day one struggles. The pair delivered solid scores of 70 and 71, respectively, to help pace the Alabama attack. Robby Shelton also carded an even-par 71.

Mullinax, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., found his rhythm at the turn, with two birdies and five pars on the last seven holes. After shooting a 9-over 80 on Sunday, Mullinax's performance moves him into a tie for 34th overall at 8-over 150 going into the final round.

Whitsett, a native of Houston, got off to a fast start with three birdies on his first eight holes in round two. He then carded two double bogeys down the stretch, but finished his round on a strong note with a birdie on his final hole. Whitsett's even-par round leaves him 11-over par and tied for 50th.

Shelton continued his strong play, firing a 1-under-par 71 effort after carding the same score in the first round. Shelton, from Wilmer, Ala., is tied for fourth at even-par 142, six shots off the lead of Houston's Roman Robledo.

True freshman Gavin Moynihan notched a 1-over par 72 for the second straight day and is tied for sixth at 2-over 144. Senior Bobby Wyatt rounded out the Tide scoring with a 4-over 75, which did not count toward the team score on Monday. He is tied for 14th entering the final round at 4-over 146.

Alabama will be paired with Houston, Baylor and Kentucky in the final round Tuesday. The shotgun start is set for 7:30 a.m. (AST) or 9:30 a.m. (CST).
