MOBILE, Ala. -
On the heels of a perfect 12 and 0 regular season and appearance in the SEC Championship, four members of the Alabama Crimson Tide have accepted invitations to the Under Armour Senior Bowl. Quarterback John Parker Wilson, tight end Travis McCall, center Antoine Caldwell and safety Rashad Johnson will all suit up for the South squad in the 60th game on January 24, 2009 in Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The game will kickoff at 6:00 pm (CT) and will be televised live by the NFL Network.
Wilson will head to Mobile with several Alabama records under his belt. The Hoover, Ala. native owns 12 school records, including career passing yards (7,747), touchdown passes (46) and total yards (7,953). He was also a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Award, which goes annually to the nation's top senior quarterback.
"It is a real honor to be invited to play in the Senior Bowl," Wilson said. "It gives me a chance to play with the best seniors in the country while also providing an opportunity to be exposed to coaches and scouts in the NFL. It means even more because it is played in the state of Alabama and I get one more chance to play in front of our fans."
Widely considered to be one of the best centers in the nation, Caldwell earned first team All-SEC honors this season for his steady play on the Crimson Tide offensive line. He is also an AFCA first team All-American and permanent team captain. The Montgomery, Ala. native is a part of an offensive line unit that ranks 23rd nationally in rushing this season. Caldwell was a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, which is given annually to the nation's best center.
McCall ranks second on the all-time games played list at Alabama with 51 contests under his belt. Known for his tremendous blocking skills, McCall has helped the Tide roll up nearly 200 yards per game on the ground. As a receiver he has reeled in seven passes for 52 yards this season.
"Travis has established himself as one of the best blocking tight ends in this year's NFL draft," Senior Bowl President and CEO Steve Hale said. "We are looking forward to him showcasing his talents here in Mobile next month."
Johnson is enjoying a fantastic senior season at the Capstone. The Sulligent, Ala. native has five interceptions this season, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Three of Johnson's picks came in the Tide's overtime win against LSU, which tied an Alabama single game record. On the season, Johnson is second on the team in tackles with 82.
"It is a tremendous opportunity to go down to Mobile and have a chance to show the NFL what I am capable of," Johnson said. "I have always dreamed of playing in the NFL and the Senior Bowl is an entire week of being able to showcase your skills to scouts and coaches. Plus, it is another chance to play in front of our great fans one more time."
