Auburn Coach & Player Quotes

Tommy Tuberville

Opening Statement ...
“This was a super win for our program.  We knew coming over here tonight that it was going to be a dogfight.  We knew that we were going to have to do a lot of things.  Our players stayed together and played as a team.  We weren’t fancy.

”Courtney (Taylor) on Wednesday had a pulled hamstring and tried to play but couldn’t go.  We lost our fullback, Mike McLaughin, on Thursday. He tore a calf muscle.  We didn’t have him in short yardage.  We were short-handed.

“We came into the game wanting to run it and we did.  We didn’t have a lot of style points but when you play good defense and you cause turnovers, you have a chance.  That is the way we have played all year long.  We are not a great football team.  We were put on a pedestal early in the year.  We fought hard and kept our heads above water.

“In 12 games, we stumbled twice.  To win 10 games in this league is huge in any year.  I am proud of our football players and how they hung with our coaches and understood what we needed to do.  They learned each week and stayed positive.  They weren’t going to score a lot of points but we were going to play well enough to get possibly a one or two point victory.

“Alabama played tough and they played hard.  They are well coached.  They schemed us a little bit.  They tricked us early on the first drive and had us a little bit confused.  I made a stupid call on the blitz right before halftime.  We just took a chance, but we probably shouldn’t have done that.  Other times, the offense played conservative, Al (Borges) will tell you that.”

On Brandon Cox ...
“Brandon came back in the second half. They confused him and put somebody in his face in certain pass plays and they forced him to throw a little quick. We figured they would blitz and they did. We had a big receiver in Prechae Rodriguez and he made the catch (on the touchdown). It was a good call by Al.”

On the feeling when Alabama scored on the first drive ...
“That’s the great thing about this time. They ran a few things and made some first down conversions. When you look back to last week, they scored on their opening drive. The first possession is usually the hardest one to stop. I wanted to take the ball first. We got a good kick return and a penalty. Then we got a couple first downs but we had to punt.”

Quentin Groves, #54 Defensive End

On  Alabama’s Offense...

They have a good offense with lots of playmakers. Their receivers are fast and they play well together.

On John Parker Wilson...

He’s an excellent athlete. They did what they had to do tonight.  We just made the plays we needed to.

 On Auburn’s  intensity...

It was there the whole time.  We knew they couldn’t stop our speed, so we had to get them in long down situations.  We did that well, and we came through when we had to.

Marquies Gunn, #48 Defensive End

On beating Alabama his senior year...

This is the best way to go out.  I’ve never lost to these guys.  That’s the best way to feel.  There is no better way to end my senior year than beating them five times in a row.

Kenny Irons, #23 Running Back

On the offense’s slow start...

We just needed to come out and be more physical.  It was important for us to play hard-nosed football, and we didn’t do that on the first couple of drives.  We came out and finished a couple of drives with a short field, and that got us going.

On the defense creating turnovers...

They really came through for us today.  I owe them one.  They got us the ball back after my fumble.  They just kept coming through for us when we needed it.

Brandon Cox, #12 Quarterback

On why the offense got off to a slow start...

I think we came out with too much emotion.  We just needed to slow down and relax.  Sometimes games like this are more mental than physical.  I think we were just too fired up.

On his lack of accuracy early in the game...

I think I was putting a little too much on my throws.  I needed a little time to relax and get settled in.

Will Herring, #35 Linebacker

On being undefeated against Alabama...

It’s the game everyone talks about all year long.  It finally got here and it couldn’t have come sooner.  To go out on a win against Alabama is a great feeling.  We are going out on top, and that’s how we want it.

On Alabama’s fast start...

We knew it would be a four quarter game.  They came out swinging.  We came back and took the lead.  Then they came storming back.  It’s a four quarter game.

On Alabama’s last drive...

We knew they had to score six.  David (Irons) has made plays all year long.  We call him “Mr. PBU”, because he bats so many balls down.  He made a great play on the ball and won the game for us.

Brad Lester, #1 Running Back

On the win...

It’s huge for us.  It gives us five in a row.  We needed this after last week.  This gives us a lot of confidence going into a long break before our bowl game.

On his touchdown run...

I just kept running and following my blocks behind Carl (Stewart).  The hole was there for me and I hit it.

On his injury in the first half...

I knew I had to come back.  This is the Auburn-Alabama game.  You can’t lay down this game.  Anything that hurts, you have to suck it up and play through it.
